Labour MP Darren Jones apologises after appointment to all male science select committee

A pathetic piece in inews (‘i’), inevitably written by a teenage girl. I imagine she’s cheaper to employ than a proper journalist. Excerpts:

Darren Jones announced his appointment to the Science and Technology Select Committee on Twitter, adding: “[I’m] also a bit embarrassed and apologise that it’s entirely men.”… [J4MB: Darren, strap on a pair, for goodness sake…]

MPs are appointed to select committees by nominating themselves and then being voted in. Select committees are cross-party and are used to check on the Government’s work and hold departments to account. Mr Jones told i no women from any party had put their names forward for the select committee… [J4MB: Our emphasis. Hmm, might THAT explain the absence of women on the committee? Just crazy speculation…]

Sophie Walker, leader of the Women’s Equality Party said Mr Jones is right to be embarrassed by the line-up of the Commons’ Science and Technology committee. Ms Walker told i:“Appointing women to the Science and Technology committee is a key part of the process of dismantling the ingrained sexism and segregation that posits STEM as a subject for boys and men: this starts in schools and continues across working life, as well as into politics.”

  1. “Appointing women to the Science and Technology committee is a key part of the process of dismantling the ingrained sexism and segregation that posits STEM as a subject for boys and men: this starts in schools and continues across working life, as well as into politics.”

Oh, yes, right. I guess that’s why in the UK when a man applies for a STEM subject job, he is half as likely to get the job as a woman is.

    • Hi David. That is an interesting statistic you quoted. Do you have a reference for it? I might find it useful in future posting on newspaper web sites etc. Thanks.

      • Hi Vasubandhu. I got the statistic from a MILO Yiannopoulos video – his final statement at a conference on “Have We Reached Equality?”. Milo summed up the bad deal men have nowadays. The relevant information is at about 2:10 – 2:18.
        Here’s a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwOAmqWhf28

I’m glad your interested – I will search for more details on this statistic (i.e. where Milo got it from) for you. I will add a message on this post if I find anything.

        Thanks,
        David

  2. Never Apologise, Never Explain, is the rule here.

    Ten reasons why;

    It will never be enough.
That you have capitulated so easily
indicates that you are weak and will
    capitulate again.
It indicates that your postion is
    weak also.
It suggests that you know it and admit
    it.
It will not placate your critics anyway.
They are not in the business of being
    placated.
Rather, It will embolden them and
confirm that they are on the right track
leading to even more demands for even
    more abasement.
It automatically appears to put you in
the wrong, even if you’re not.
It will stop you speaking out again in
the future, which is the intention.
So why make it easy by doing their
    work for them?

As used to be said – too often perhaps, but I won’t let That stop me here –
    “You know it makes sense!”
