The author of ‘Diary of an MP’s wife’ is a guest on this week’s Chopper’s Politics podcast
The wife of a former Government minister has warned of a number of “predatory females” around politics who target MPs when they are in their flats in London far from home.
Sasha Swire, who has published an acclaimed political diary covering her time when her husband Sir Hugo was an MP and minister, complained that MPs were forced to spend too much time apart from their families.
Ms Swire blamed the MPs’ expenses scandal in 2009 for making it harder for families to stay together during the week because of a clampdown on what could be claimed.
She said it was “quite dangerous, men sitting alone in London by themselves – that was a fallout from the expenses [scandal], which I think affected many marriages.
“Because men come to London, maybe women too, but they come to London and they suddenly think they’re terribly important.
“And, you know, there’s quite a lot of predatory females around politics. And then the wife doesn’t change, really, she’s still the same wife with the same kids.”
In an interview with Chopper’s Politics podcast, Ms Swire – whose husband Sir Hugo was MP for East Devon from 2001 to 2019 – said not enough people thanked MPs for their years of public service.
She said: “No-one ever says thank you”, adding: “The Queen said thank you to him, when he was knighted and I thought that was just a really nice thing to say.”
Ms Swire – whose husband is a close friend of David Cameron and served in his government as a minister from 2010 to 2016 – added: “I just think it’s polite, do you know what I mean? Nobody says thank you anymore. It’s amazing isn’t it?”
