A piece from exactly a century ago, in today’s Times:
At the Marylebone Police Court yesterday Captain Garvey Gadd, of Albert Hall Mansions, Kensington, was summoned for assaulting Mr Charles Hy Willi, a Swiss surgeon, and his wife, Marie, of Baker Street.
Mr Willi said he had practised in London as a plastic surgeon for 10 years under a licence from the LCC. Captain Gadd’s wife called at his house, and, saying that she had a young husband and wanted to look much younger, asked him to “lift” her face and remove her double chin. He operated. Three days later Captain Gadd, whom he had never seen before, rushed into his room and gave him a heavy blow behind the ear, attacked him with his stick, threw him to the floor, stamped on his face, and kicked him.
At that point Mrs Willi intervened, and the captain struck her on the jaw and in the breast. In cross-examination, Mr Willi admitted that he was not a registered medical practitioner, but said he held an honorary degree from the Oriental University of Washington and was an aesthetic surgeon. Before operating, he said, he drew a fee of £26 5s and injected a local anaesthetic. When he saw Mrs Gadd she was getting on splendidly and shook hands with him.
Captain Gadd said he found his wife in a very bad state; she had two scars down the side of her face two inches in length, and the whole of her face from the left eye was discoloured. When he went to see Mr Willi the latter seized his stick, hit him with it, kicked him on the shin, and tried to push him downstairs. Mrs Willi lunged at him (Captain Gadd) with a chair. He added that his wife had never had a double chin.
The Magistrate said he was not sure what happened, but he thought that probably it was a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other. [J4MB emphasis: Judges were so much more sensible 100 years ago.] He dismissed the summonses, without costs.
