A piece in today’s Times:
A Baptist pastor has been placed on leave after telling women worshippers that they should look pretty, lose weight and submit to their husbands’ sexual desires to stay married.
Stewart-Allen Clark asked his Sunday congregation at First General Baptist Church in Malden, Missouri: “Why is it that so many times, women, after they get married, let themselves go?
“Way too many women are: ‘I’ve got him now, the chase is over.’ Hey, that’s where you’re wrong. The chase ain’t never over.” Clark, who wore faded jeans and a brown cardigan over a bulging belly, went on: “I want you to know a need that a man has that he won’t ever tell you about but since I’m the preacher man I’ll say it. Your man needs an attractive wife.
“I’m not saying that every woman can be the epic trophy wife of all time like Melania Trump. Most women can’t be trophy wives but, you know maybe you can get a participation trophy.”
His church said that the 55-year-old pastor had taken time off to “seek professional counselling”.
The General Baptist Council of Associations, based in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, said in a statement that his message was “not consistent” with the denomination’s positions and values.
Reagan Williams, a member of the congregation, said that the livestreamed sermon amounted to “toxic and damaging ideology”.
Clark said that he been holding marriage counselling sessions for his parishioners.
Among those who sought his help was a couple whose relationship was in trouble because the wife “looked like a Sumo wrestler” and her husband was a “little guy”.
Clark said his wife joined Weight Watchers after having had three pregnancies “because she knows that it’s important”.
He added that he thought women should wear make-up, dress nicely, tend their hair, not wear pyjamas and flip-flops to go shopping, avoid sweatpants and “appear less butch”.
Husbands should display a Bible verse on the headboards of their beds reminding their wives of their duty to honour them with their bodies, he said.
