After a break of 20+ years I’ve just taken up completing cryptic crosswords again, something that’s both absorbing and relaxing at the same time. I managed to finish last Saturday’s Daily Telegraph prize crossword (my late father won the prize 45+ years ago). An article from the Telegraph in 2019. I recommend the following:
- How to Solve a Cryptic Crossword (2020) – Chris Lancaster, Telegraph Puzzles Editor
- The Chambers Dictionary
- The Chambers Thesaurus
- The website crosswordsolver.org for when you have only one or two final clues you simply can’t solve. Just insert the letters you have, and hey presto, all the potential words are there.
The latest book of 100 Telegraph cryptic crosswords is currently available from Amazon for just £2.00 – here. An annual subscription to the puzzles site at the Telegraph costs about 10p/day, or you can pay month-by-month at £4.99. Let me know if I can give you any advice about cryptic crosswords. Happy solving!
