Sir Elton John is at the centre of a legal dispute with his ex-wife after she applied for an injunction against the singer 32 years after their divorce.
Renate Blauel, who has avoided publicity since splitting from Sir Elton in 1988, began proceedings against him at the High Court in London last week.
The 73-year-old star is named as the defendant in paperwork relating to the case, according to The Guardian, although his representatives declined to comment.
Ms Blauel’s legal team did not reveal what the case was about but said she “hopes to resolve the matter privately and amicably”.
Injunctions are normally sought in relation to privacy matters or to prevent the publication of material.
Ms Blauel, 67, a German-born sound engineer, worked on albums such as Duran Duran’s Rio and the Human League’s Hysteria before she met Sir Elton in a recording studio while he was making Too Low for Zero in 1983. The pair married in Sydney, Australia, on Valentine’s Day the next year, when Ms Blauel said: “He’s the nicest guy I’ve ever met.” Sir Elton had told Rolling Stone magazine that he was bisexual in 1976 and did not announce that he was gay until his relationship with Ms Blauel ended.
In his 2019 autobiography Me, he revealed his anguish as he struggled to accept his sexuality around the time of the split. “Despite all the pain, there was no acrimony involved at all,” he wrote.
“For years afterwards, whenever something happened to me, the press would turn up on her doorstep, looking for her to dish the dirt, and she never, ever has.”
There was renewed interest in their relationship last year when it was depicted in Rocketman, a biopic of Sir Elton in which Ms Blauel is played by Celinde Schoenmaker.
The singer, who has sold more than 300 million records and is worth an estimated £403 million, married David Furnish in 2014 and the pair adopted their sons, Zachary and Elijah.
