A tip of the hat to delegates at an event in Kalgoorlie, Australian. A piece by Roger Maynard in yesterday’s Times:
It is one of the last bastions of politically incorrect Australia, a testosterone- fuelled microcosm of drinking culture.
For the past 20 years delegates at the three-day Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, have retired to its bars after a day of corporate chin-wagging to relax with a drink served up by scantily clad barmaids.
This year the Palace Hotel, where many delegates stay, decided that the female staff, who usually served beer wearing very little, should be properly attired. There had, apparently, been some criticism by some of the delegates and their employers.
The owner, Ashok Parekh, declared that the world had changed and he banished “skimpies”. However, the world hadn’t changed as much as he thought and takings on the first night sank. “We had a lot of complaints,” he admitted.
There was only one solution: the skimpies were brought back in the back bar the following day, with the “no skimpies” policy remaining for more respectable patrons in the front bar. Business boomed once again.
“It’s a bit of a compromise,” Mr Parekh told the Kalgoorlie Miner newspaper. “In the end, no matter what people say, you’ve got to look at what the public wants.”
