A piece by Nicola Woolcock in today’s Times:
Ed Miliband, the former Labour leader, has thrown his support behind a campaign to outlaw private schools under the social media banner “abolish Eton”. Labour Against Private Schools is pushing the party to commit to removing fee-charging schools’ privileges and integrating them into the state system. It wants Labour to make the pledge at its party conference in September (writes Nicola Woolcock).
Mr Miliband said the debate about private schools had been “taboo for too long”, adding that their “domination of the upper echelons of our society” had “huge implications for unequal opportunity, social mobility and inequality”.
The campaign was launched yesterday using the Twitter handle @AbolishEton and aims to capitalise on anger about the narrow range of schooling of today’s senior politicians. Mike Buchanan, of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference, which represents leading private schools, said that such schools created “free places for children from disadvantaged backgrounds”, adding: “I invite politicians of any party to talk with me about how we can do even more together to extend such opportunities”.
